For R/3 installation the right kind of partition of each component is required which includes the partition for the Microsoft SQL Server, R/3 data files and transaction logs. For database minimum 4 GB drive is required, for R/3 Data Files - 10 GB drive is required and for Transaction logs at least 2 GB drive is needed.
For installation of R/3 - a Domain Controller is created which integrates the SAP R/3 Servers to the Domain Server and the domain user name and password is created. To install R/3 SAP Kernel should be installed.
Requirements of SAP Installation
Install the Operating System: A server is required for SAP installation on laptop or home computer. SAPGUI can be used by the user computer for installation - it is not required on server computer. For home computers both GUI and modules can be installed on one machine.
VMware is a system which helps the system to install a number of operating system on one machine and it can be used to install a server on existing host operating system. The application server requires at least 4 GB of space and 512 MB RAM. The software can also be installed on dual boot system with Windows 7 or Windows Vista as previous OS. For installation SATA drivers are required in case the OS is Windows Server 2003.
Space: The machine may require a good space and network capabilities, and the home desktop, CPU power, Hard Disk space and RAM should be checked before installation. The space depends on the number of users and database size.
Network Capabilities: The Microsoft Loopback Adapter can be used for installation of SAP on a standalone machine and the servers can be connected to the existing networks in real time systems.
J2 SDK: The SAP screens require the installation of J2 SDK which enables the screens and it requires the installation of JDK. One may have to set the path to JAVA _HOME in the variables and bin path to enable the system environment variables. It is important to make Java work.
Creating Database: Based on the selection of database one will have to allocate space for database and log files. The choice of database depends on the requirements of the company.
Creating the Central and Database Instance: To install SAP, the central instance should be created, which is done in the SAP directory structure, and services such as dialog, update, background, message server, spool, gateway server and enque.
The process of installation of R/3 database programs includes creation of a run time, designing the directory structure of the database and making user inputs.
